The Demise of Newspapers

Most of today’s newspapers are currently on life support waiting for technology to finally pull the plug. Recently the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Seattle’s oldest newspaper announced it would shift to an entirely digital news product. Many newspapers are facing financial hardship, and are having difficult times staying afloat. Some newspapers are conforming to today’s society by converting to digital. While other papers are drifting off to the abyss.

In all honesty, the role of newspapers in society began to depreciate when television and radio appeared on the scene. Today, the internet has affected the role of the printed news in American’s lives more than any other medium. Webpage’s such as Craigslist reduce the need for classified ads in printed newspapers. Today’s society is all about convenience and news on the internet is free and immediate.

The transition to electronic based media outlets will have a huge impact on journalists. Journalists will have to be ready for anything, because breaking news can happen at any second. Citizens view journalists as experts so the public depends on journalists to break a story as it happens. This could become very disheartening for journalists. Today’s society demands the most from its journalists and with the transition from print to digital we might be expecting too much.
